Dojo's Guidelines & Rules

< previous

Outside the Dojo - The World at Large

• Do not give a demonstration or teach Gorindo without the approval of your sensei. Practice only that which you have been taught. Do not be in a hurry to learn advanced techniques or kata. You will be taught new technique when sensei deems that you have acquired the basic proficiency necessary to move on. This may involve mental and moral aspects as well as physical.

• Do not be involved in any activities that might degrade Gorindo ethics or the reputation of the School.

• Do not criticize any other Martial Art schools or styles. The mountain does not laugh at the river because it is running lowly, nor does the river speak ill of the mountain because it cannot move above. Everyone has their own characteristics and gains their own position in life. Speak ill of others, and it will surely come back to you.

Arriving Late at the Dojo Door

• If you arrive late, then wait to be invited to train by the teacher, don’t just ‘jump’ in.

• During mokuso - Do Not Enter

• During warm up - Bow in (wait to be acknowledged) and join the class at the rear.

• After class has started - Bow in (wait) and complete the standard warm-up before joining in. Sometimes if you are very late or the class is already engaged in special training you will be asked to sit out and observe. This precaution is for your own safety and the continuity of the class.

• Remember to ask if there were any announcements at the start of class. You might be missing some important information.

Dojo Layout

• Shomen: upper seat, reserved for teachers or honoured guests.

• Shimoseki: lower side, area with seating for visitor or spectators, at the left of the upper seat or shomen.

• Joseki: upper side, where the high belts seat.

• Shimoza: lower seat, where usually the additional equipment for training is stored.
Gorindo Dojo Layout

When lining up for class, the highest ranking student will be to the right of the shomen area. If more than one student is of the same rank, then the one with the longest time in that grade will be to the right. If both have the same time then priority is given to the one who started before. If they have the same starting date, then the eldest will line up to the right.

Visitors to the dojo go to the rear of the class unless invited to do otherwise by the sensei.
